For many young dancers, dance class is about much more than learning turns, leaps, and choreography. It can also be a place where lifelong friendships begin.
Yet making friends isn’t always easy. Walking into a new class, joining a new team, or watching other dancers who already seem connected can feel intimidating. If you’ve ever felt nervous about fitting in, you’re not alone.
Remember That Most Dancers Feel Nervous Too
It’s easy to assume everyone else is confident and comfortable. The truth is that many dancers worry about being accepted, making mistakes, or finding their place within a group.
Friendships often start with something simple—a smile, a compliment, or sitting next to someone during a break.
Be Curious About Others
One of the easiest ways to make a friend is to show interest in someone else.
Try asking questions like:
What is your favorite dance style?
How long have you been dancing?
What is your favorite competition dance this season?
What do you like to do outside of dance?
People often appreciate when someone takes the time to get to know them.
Focus on Being a Good Teammate
Friendship grows when people feel supported. Cheer for your teammates, celebrate their successes, and encourage them when they’re struggling.
The dancers who create the strongest friendships are often not the loudest or most talented—they’re the ones who make others feel welcome.
It Takes Time
Not every friendship happens overnight. Sometimes it takes weeks or even months of sharing classes, rehearsals, and performances before a connection develops.
If you don’t feel like you’ve found “your people” yet, don’t give up. Keep showing up, being kind, and being yourself.
Be Yourself
One of the biggest mistakes young people make is trying to change who they are to fit in. Real friendships happen when people get to know the real you.
The right friends won’t expect you to be someone else. They’ll appreciate your personality, your quirks, your humor, and your unique strengths.
Dance Is Better Together
The trophies fade, routines change, and seasons come and go. Often, what dancers remember most are the friendships they built along the way.
So the next time you walk into class, challenge yourself to say hello, introduce yourself to someone new, or offer encouragement to a teammate. Small moments of connection can grow into friendships that last far beyond the dance studio.
After all, some of the best things we learn at dance have nothing to do with dance at all.
